Cover  A dinner-dress designed by Charles James, presented by Elizabeth Arden

1944 or 1928? A dinner-dress designed by Charles James, presented by Elizabeth Arden.
A dress that looks unmistakably 1944, but is a recreation of Charles James' most famous London dress made sixteen years ago, in 1928. (Originally, it was ankle length.)
Not long ago, the Brooklyn Art Museum included it in its library of dresses that mark a historic change in fashion.
And now today, it is news again - Five smart New Yorkers already wear it. Prophetic is the ink-green shade of it. Fashion-influencing is the line of it. And very dramatic with it is Suzanne et Roger's hat of wired black lilacs.
