written on the pencil: "4 coryphées accompagnent sa bien aimée" (4 ballerinas accompany his beloved)
(the crossed shins and the head of death are the Pierre Roy's signature)
Pierre Roy designed sets for the theatre and ballet, including Coppelia London 1938, Le Lion Amoureux for Covent Garden and Jeux de Cartes for the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Paris.
In 1914, shortly before his mobilization, Pierre Roy befriended Adrienne Ridou, a seamstress of 23 years working for Paul Poiret. The couple had a son, Denis, in 1917, but the young woman died of peritonitis in 1919 (the child was raised by Donatienne, Pierre's sister). This design comes from the estate of Adrienne Ridou. This sequence also contained models of Erte with which Adrienne had worked during the war after the closure of the house Paul Poiret.
